Select a verse from today’s reading
Mark 1:21-22 (NKJV) 21 Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. 22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
O // OBSERVATION
Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text
As I read this passage this morning I remember the town of Capernaum. I visited the town with friends from church in 2019. I’m so glad I was able to go. Capernaum was definitely one of the highlights.
A great deal of the town has now been excavated. You can see houses, roads and the proximity of the town to the Sea of Galilee.
It’s also very clear where the temple is - this very temple mentioned in scripture. I stood where Jesus taught in the synagogue and caused them to marvel because He taught as one with authority.
A // APPLICATION
How can I apply this to my life today?
Today’s devotion is one of nostalgia, as much as anything. I remember back to a powerful experience that brings me closer to Jesus.
There are experiences in my life that remind me Jesus is real. He walked along streets. He stayed in houses. He ate food. He had friends. He preached in synagogues. He changed the world.
He was real then and He’s real today. He is not a philosophy or a fantasy or a figment of our imagination.
I am thankful for the real Jesus, then and now.
P // PRAYER
Express yourself in prayer
Jesus, I am so grateful that You came to live among us. I think about Your life and I am encouraged today. Amen.
