S // SCRIPTURE
Select a verse from today’s reading
Zephaniah 3:12-13 (NKJV) 12 I will leave in your midst A meek and humble people, And they shall trust in the name of the LORD. 13 The remnant of Israel shall do no unrighteousness And speak no lies, Nor shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth; For they shall feed their flocks and lie down, And no one shall make them afraid.”
O // OBSERVATION
Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text
This prophecy of Zephaniah involves correction and judgement for the vast majority of those people in Jerusalem. They had turned away from God, pursued their own interests and brought disgrace on the nation.
There was a small remnant, however, who were meek and humble, who trusted in the Lord. They were not part of the majority but stayed faithful even though they were a small minority.
A // APPLICATION
How can I apply this to my life today?
Sometimes it is better to be part of a minority than part of the majority. It may be better to go against the flow than with the flow.
Moms everywhere have used the line, “If all your friends jumped off a cliff would you jump off too?” I think it’s in the Mom Handbook. The point is to have the courage to make your own decision even if it didn’t go along with the popular thing to do.
It feels like, more than ever, a lot of people are jumping off a cliff these days.
Sometimes it’s better to be a remnant, a holdout, a non-conformist than to go along with the crowd. Even in a one-way culture I can be a God’s-way guy.
Don’t curse the stream of popular opinion. Go upstream. Be part of the remnant.
“And no one shall make them afraid”.
P // PRAYER
Express yourself in prayer
Jesus, Help me keep my eyes off the majority and on You. Amen.
