S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Joel 1:2 (NKJV) Hear this, you elders, And give ear, all you inhabitants of the land! Has anything like this happened in your days, Or even in the days of your fathers?

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

There were things happening in the days of Joel that had never happened before. These are things that are unprecedented - have no precedent. They hadn’t seen it before and they hadn’t even heard about such a thing.

God was moving and working in those unprecedented times. These times and these prophesied from Joel form the prophetic understanding of the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was poured out in an unprecedented way.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

As people, we tend to rely on precedent for comfort. We can set routines to it. I know what has happened in the past and feel, based on that, I know what to expect for the future. I can do tomorrow what I did yesterday and get the same results. It allows a sort of autopilot.

But when things come that I’ve never experienced before I can’t rely on cruise control. I have to deal with a new thing in a new way and I can feel kind of lost. What do I do?

In many ways, we are living in unprecedented times. I can’t just rely on patterns, actions and thinking of the past. I have become newly dependent on hearing God TODAY for the circumstances I find myself in TODAY.

Many people are bothered and even scared by this new development. I think it causes us to press into God, His Word and His Holy Spirit in a new way. If I didn’t realize it before now I do - I am totally dependent on Him every minute of every day.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Holy Spirit, Please lead, guide and empower me for whatever I may face today. Amen.
