Beware Babylon

Daily Reading // Isaiah 47:1-15

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to three times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Isaiah 47:10 "For you have trusted in your wickedness; You have said, ‘No one sees me’; Your wisdom and your knowledge have warped you; And you have said in your heart, ‘I [am,] and [there is] no one else besides me.’

These words were written to describe the Chaldeans, the people of Babylon. It described their pride and arrogance. They were the superpower of the world. They were the most affluent and mighty. They felt a superiority, like they were in a class by themselves. They could get away with anything. They knew everything. They had reached the top.

Of course, it doesn’t just describe them. It also describes us. In a sense it describes anyone whose ‘wisdom’ tells them there is none greater than them, that they have no accountability. I think it is especially fitting to us in the U.S. We are the ‘Chaldeans’ of our day.

Beware of superiority! Beware of knowledge that warps! Beware of feeling accountability to no one, as if no one sees. These are the symptoms of wickedness.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Jesus, I gladly submit and surrender to You. You are superior in every way. Lead mw with Your compassion today. Amen.
