S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Matthew 11:18-19 (NKJV) 18 “For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 “The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children.”

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

John the Baptist and Jesus were very different in their ministry style.

Even though their ministry styles were different, they were on the same team. John affirmed Jesus and Jesus affirmed John.

Even though their ministry styles were different, they were both targets of criticism. Neither style was able to please their critics.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

Avoiding criticism should not be a top priority in ministry. In fact, adjusting for the critics will most likely also be criticized.

John was criticized for his austere style. He lived in a very unique way. He was remote and called people on their sin and hypocrisy. He urged them to repent.

Jesus was criticized for his relatability. He loved people and they loved Him. He was accessible and touched people in need to bring healing. He invited people to follow Him.

These are two very different approaches with one purpose, just like ministers all around today.

When I am criticized I am in very good company.

Oh, and don’t be critical of others. I don’t want to be part of that crowd.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Jesus, Fill me with Your Spirit to fulfill my calling. Amen.
