Isaiah 62:6 (NKJV) I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; They shall never hold their peace day or night. You who make mention of the LORD, do not keep silent,
The idea of a watchman on the walls has always been very intriguing to me. Fortified cities (not all cities) had a wall surrounding a good part of the city. Jerusalem was the largest fortified city in Israel.
The wall by itself wasn’t the only aspect of its protection. The wall also served as a lookout post for the watchmen. The watchman on the wall was the one who stayed alert while everyone else rested peacefully. The watchman was constantly looking for anything that came towards the city, especially for things that presented a threat, and sounded the alarm.
In difficult times or times of high alert, what a difference a watchman makes! The people resting inside could relax knowing nothing could get to them undetected. I will not be caught off guard!
In the military we had guard duty. Whoever had guard duty stayed up all night while everyone else slept.
Jesus was a Nazarene. One meaning of the word Nazareth is ‘guarded one’. In this sense, Jesus is truly ‘One who guards’, or a watchman. Jesus is my Watchman.
Nothing can get to me without His attention. I can have peace because of His protection. When I am anxious, maybe it’s because I’m not trusting the Watchman. Am I listening to His voice? Then what do I have to fear?
RESPOND // ORATIO
Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.
Jesus, I trust You and I rest in You. Nothing comes to me without Your watchful eye. Thank You for being my Watchman. Amen.
