What Do I Grab?

Daily Reading // Isaiah 31:1-9

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to three times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Isaiah 31:1 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, And rely on horses, Who trust in chariots because they are many, And in horsemen because! they are very strong, But who do not look to the Holy One of Israel, Nor seek the LORD!

There’s nothing wrong with needing help. We all need help from time to time. My need for help shows my reliance on someone or something outside myself. My willingness to admit I am not sufficient for everything within myself is a healthy demonstration of humility.

Needing help shows me something else. It shows me where I turn for help when I’m in need. If I’m climbing up a hill and start to fall, I’m going to look for the biggest, sturdiest, most trustworthy branch or bush to grab. In my instinct I will make a split-second evaluation and grab for my best bet.

The same thing happens in life. When I start to slip in finances, or relationships, or emotions, or frustrated plans or anything else, where do I grab? Do I grab for a bottle? Do I grab for a self-help book? Do I grab for more debt? Do I grab for an unhealthy person or habit? Or is my first reaction to reach out for God, His Word and godly people in my life?

Where I naturally grab for help tells me a lot about me.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Jesus, You are my Rock, my firm foundation. Today I trust in You. I rely on You. Thank You for the many ways You make provision for me. I receive Your help today. Amen.
