S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Psalms 143:5 (NKJV) I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands.

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

David had time to think. Throughout the day, between activities, when he laid down at night, David’s mind was active. He took that time to spend time with his thoughts.

He remembered. He meditated. He mused.

These are all mind activities. They involve using your mind in a profitable way. I’m sure many of the psalms were born in this time for David.

David controlled his mind and his thoughts. They didn’t control him.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

I think we have become very poor at using our idle time. For one thing, we are always stimulating our minds with music, screens or something. We are afraid to allow our minds to be idle.

As a result we don’t know how to control our thoughts and use them productively rather than destructive self-talk. It would be amazing if we could learn how to remember, how to meditate and how to muse.

How am I using my idle mind time? Is it productive or destructive? Or do I drown it out altogether?

Today - remember … meditate … muse.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Father, Teach me to control my thoughts so they don’t control me. Help me use my mind to draw closer to You. Amen.
