Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.
Psalms 51:4 NKJV
How could David say, “Against You only have I sinned”? He committed adultery with Bathsheba. He murdered Uriah. He betrayed his position as king.
We can wrong other people, but we don’t sin against them. We can only sin against God.
Sin is a particular type of betrayal. It involves doing my own thing even though I know it’s not what God wants for me. It is using my free will that God has given me to go against Him. It was the reason for Jesus’ death and sacrifice.
I think we have really minimized what sin is, even glorifying it in some instances. Sin is no joking matter.
