S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Song of Songs 1:2-3 (NKJV) 2 The Shulamite Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth-- For your love [is] better than wine. 3 Because of the fragrance of your good ointments, Your name [is] ointment poured forth; Therefore the virgins love you.

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

You can’t see love. There is a union between husband and wife, man and woman, that is unseen. Even though it is unseen it is very real.

Here we are told love is better than wine. Wine is physical, tangible, seen. Love is not. But having love is preferred to having wine.

The phrase ‘your name’ speaks of a long term, committed relationship. It is compared with ointment. Again, something seen compared with something unseen.

In both of these cases the unseen of relationship has more practical value than things that are seen.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

My relationship can have greater effect than wine or ointment. Conversely, relationship with me can destructive.

Wine throughout scripture speaks of life, health and joy. Do people, especially my wife and close relationships, find those things from time with me?

Ointment is for healing and soothing of wounds. Do my words and actions bring that to others? Or am I more likely to inflict the wounds?

I want relationship with me to be wine and ointment.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Lord, Make my words and my interaction with others today wine and ointment. Amen.
