S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

1 Corinthians 14:6 (NKJV) But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

Paul is writing to the Corinthians about their public gatherings. He is gently trying to correct some problems with the gatherings. When people were talking their focus was on profiting themselves rather than profiting others.

They have to change their mindset from ‘how can I profit me’ to ‘how can I profit you’.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

This is not just a good mindset change for when you’re in church, but any time. What if I were to consider all my words with this criteria? Before I speak I should ask the question, “How does what I’m about to say profit my hearer? Is this for my profit or for their profit?”

If what I’m about to say doesn’t profit the hearer, then I can choose not to say it. Maybe, once I think it through, what I’m about to say really doesn’t profit anyone. It most likely will be destructive, not constructive. Why would I say it?

Imagine what the world would be like if all communication passed through this filter and only that which was profitable to the heater were spoken. What a different world this would be!

All I can do is start with me.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Lord, Make my words profitable to those around me. Amen.
